It's Not Unusual
For those of you who think it is odd that the Elgin Military
Museum is in the process of developing a Naval Museum annex in Port
Burwell; it is time to think again. While the home of the museum is
indeed in land locked St. Thomas, Ontario, it is only a few
kilometres from the 10th largest lake in the world. No
one who has seen the wrath of Lake Erie in a storm can doubt that
it is an awareness that will stand any sailor in good stead.
Indeed, it has taken three local men, Stuart Paddon, Ken Summers
and Dan McNeil to the rank of Rear Admiral and many others to
rewarding careers. Paddon who began his
service as one of the first Radar Officers, retired as Rear Admiral
in 1972; Summers retired as Chief
of Operations of the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic in 2000; and
McNeil under
Canada's evolving military commitments, became the first "Commander
Joint Task Force Atlantic" in 2005 and retired in 2006.
